14th August - Finals Day
Experience counted in the sunshine today as Linda Bain won her 8th Championship, overcoming a spirited performance from Mandy McBain. Linda made her customary slow start and Mandy took advantage by parring the first three holes to take an early 2-up lead. However Linda came back with a par-birdie-par at holes 4,5 and 6 to turn the tie around and take a lead which she was to retain and increase to 4-up after 13. After Mandy won the 14th the 15th was halved then with Linda sitting pretty on the 16th green Mandy conceded the match and clearly enjoyed her first final.
The Bronze Championship between Fiona Findlay and Mayte Vaamonde was a closely contested match. Fiona took an early 2-up lead after 3 holes but was quickly pegged back as Mayte took a 1-up lead at the turn. The match continued with never more than one hole separating the two and it looked like captain Fiona was going to just edge it at the 18th after Mayte's tee-shot ended in the trees on the right then the recovery shot found the fairway bunker with Fiona's shots safely up the fairway. However Fiona's putt for the match failed to drop and a superb up and down from Mayte took the tie into the extra hole and momentum was definitely with the Spanish with no missed fairway on the 1st as Mayte sunk the winning putt to take the 2010 Lochend Bronze Championship (her second major trophy in her first year at Lochend, alongside the Ladies Open) and become the latest Spanish success story of the summer.
11th August semi-finals....
|Linda Bain continues her march on an 8th Championship after a semi-final which in the end was convincing after an early scare. Linda, as she has done in the past was slow out of the blocks and Coleen Derighetti took full advantage with a two up lead after 8 holes. Then just as she has done in the past, Linda began to play the kind of golf which has brought her all those Championship successes, getting into her stride after the turn at the same time Coleen wasn't finding the high standard of the outward nine, was struggling to match Linda's momentum and eventually conceded the match at the 16th.
Linda's opponent in the final on Saturday will be Mandy McBain who has been building up momentum of her own recently with Medal wins, Open prizes and a handicap which is ever decreasing. An emphatic semi-final win tonight at the 15th over Diane Moncrieff ensures a the fine run continues, who knows it may end with the big one.
Top two qualifiers Fiona Findlay and Mayte Vaamonde made it through to the Ladies Bronze Championship Final tonight with Mayte proving too strong on the night for Yvonne Murdoch and Fiona going the distance to hold off the challenge from Margaret Richards to sink the winning putt at the 18th
|REMEMBER FINALS DAY ON SATURDAY WITH THE PRIZEGIVING, BUFFET AND DISCO.|
The Ladies championship kicked of tonight and Linda Bain's unbeaten run in this competition (stretching back to the final of 2005) continued with her win over Violet Paterson to take her a step nearer that 8th title win. Pat Meike and Coleen Derighetti resumed what used to be a regular meeting in this competition and, as usual it was a very closely contested match with Pat taking an early 2-up lead, with only a lengthy putt at the 4th from Coleen preventing the margin getting even wider. By the 8th the tie was all square and it was game on again as both players then proceeded to play well and score better than their handicaps would suggest.
However, at the 17th Pat was unlucky not to drive the green (at 2-down) unfortunately it rolled into the bunker instead leaving Coleen with and un-pressured pitch and put to win the latest of these tussles. And the reward for tonight's win? A match against 7 times winner Linda Bain (yikes !)
In the other half of the draw Diane Moncreiff came through a few scares to see-off Jaci Moriarty thanks to some exceptional putting. and will now meet Mandy McBain who won her tie with Joan Gray.
Next up .......all semi-finals WEDNESDAY NIGHT......FINALS DAY SATURDAY24th July
After the final qualifying round today the placings have been finalised and the question is can anyone halt Linda Bain's quest for an 8th Championship win? Mandy McBain's 3rd medal win today showed her intent with Diane Moncrieff and Pat Meikle also improving their qualifying scores, it's gonna be a competitive competition. As is the Bronze Championship with only 5 strokes separating the top four qualifiers, open winner Mayte Vaamonde leads the way. Good Luck all.
