Lochend Golf Club

20th August Finals Day
A week later than scheduled due to the weather but we got there in the end and it didn't disappoint. In what must be the biggest upset since Linda Bain won the first of her 8 titles in 1995 the tables were very much turned today as Diane Moncrieff stole the show with a superb performance to take the title.
The year had so far belonged to Linda with her three sub-70 medal winning rounds (including an as yet unofficial course record 68), retaining the Turnhouse Championship and also being selected for the Midlothian County Squad it looked odds on for her winning a 9th Lochend title. However Diane proved that her game has come along way since her last appearance in the final in 2004 and delivered the first blow by going 1-up at the first. Now Linda has been a notoriously slow starter in her previous finals so getting back to all square at the next hole and only being one down after 6 (thanks to Diane's birdie 3 at the fourth) she was actually in a better position than in the previous three finals. However Diane went 2-up with a par at the 10th and three up with a par at the 12th and proceeded to match Linda's birdie three at the 13th so the seemingly impossible was now a definite possibility.
When Diane took the 14th all she needed was a half at the 15th. A smart second shot where she opted to go for the middle of the green instead of the pin proved the telling stroke as she took the two putts needed for a remarkable victory and a place in Next Year's Champion of Champions where she may well meet Linda again.

Congratulations to Sandra Craig who won the Ladies Bronze Championship with a convincing win over Nicola Moriarty

17th August -
Torrential rain still playing havoc with the championship schedule it is hoped all the various finalists will be known by Saturday's re-arranged finals day (barring any more monsoons).
What we do know is that Diane Moncrieff is into Saturday's Final after a convincing semi-final win over Jaci Moriarty. Diane's opponent will not be known until Saturday morning when Linda Bain and Eileen Gillespie renew there aquantance having shared the last 9 championships between them.

Nicola Moriarty and Sandra Craig will meet in the Bronze Championship Final and will also have to play early on Saturday due to prior commitments before the inclement weather.
Good Luck to all
look forward to a fine day with plenty of support from the members.

8th August
Ladies entered the championship fray tonight. And red-hot favourite Linda Bain, going for her 9th championship, progressed to the semi-final after her win over Myra Law. Linda will meet Eileen Gillespie who had a fine run herself in this tournament not so long ago with her three-in-a-row wins in 2003, 4 and 5. Eileen booked her semi-final place after a strong win over last year's finalist Mandy McBain
In the other quarter-finals Jaci Moriarty scored an emphatic 5&4 victory over Coleen Derighetti but it was the final match that raised the eyebrows as second seed Diane Moncrieff was given a tough time by lady captain Fiona Findlay. With Fiona 2-up going up the 14th and Diane's approach not looking clever, the upset of the evening looked very much a possibility. However Diane managed the half there, won the 16th and 17th and the tie was all square after 18th. And Diane's grim determination paid of as she sunk the winning putt on the first extra hole.
