In contrast to Friday night’s glamorous finery the ladies turned out in their Festive gear today. It did get a bit wet and muddy but it was still very colourful Here’s to 2023…

02/12/2022
It was that time again tonight. The annual Ladies prizegiving Christmas Dinner.  With a presentation unlike any other, the prizes were announced by Jaci Moriarty, in her unique style, and present by Captain Mandy McBain with all the the usual banter.
Diane Moncrieff had an exceptional year. So much so that her seat was moved to save her some time collecting the various prizes and trophies, including the Ladies Championship Trophy (for a fourth time), the Centenary Trophy and League Cup to name a few.
If we had a  player of the year award, pretty sure Diane would be the one for 2022.
Susan Randall also bagged her fair share of Silverware as you can see, she was “pleased as punch”.
Full list of 2022 competition winners can be found HERE
Well done to all the winners, as always a great get-together and lovely to catch up with Lochend Ladies who we don’t see as often these days.

Diane Moncrieff won the Centenary trophy today.  Heavy underfoot conditions did not make it easy for us and Diane was the lone player to break par with a 69.  Closely followed by Lorna Lynch (70), who took the first Silver Prize.   Eileen Gillespie was second in the Silver with 73.  Pat Meikle won the Bronze with 78 and Trish Lang had the second place with 79.
I’m sure Diane (our current Lady Champion) doesn’t want this season to end such is the run she is on.  This latest win has sent het shooting to the top of the league with one competition to go.

Good to see Evelyn McCowan has still got that winning touch, collecting September medal, Autumn meeting & longest drive prizes at the Ormskirk golf club prizegiving.
For those newer members who may not know, Evelyn dominated the Lochend Ladies Championship throughout 80’s and 90’s, holding the proud record of 15 championship wins.  Evelyn now hails from Ormskirk, Liverpool, is still a Lochend member and can be seen at various Lochend Tournaments, holidays and as many social occasions as she can.  Lochender Always !!

The John Flynn Memorial Trophy was won today by Duncan Ireland and Bren Ford. Their better-ball score of 55 was two better than the runner-up pairing of Gordon Nelson and William Buchanan. Tony Anderson and Mark Bryant were third with 58.
The System had a problem and threw out a couple of strange scores.  Rest assured, once the technical hitch was sorted, there was no team at 23-under.

Some more Lochend success on the road as Viv Mitchell got to the final of  the East Lothian Vet’s Summer Matchplay, playing Seline Stewart at Monktonhall.
Jaci Moriarty got to a final of the Midlothian County and also had an away tie. Hilary Wallace was the opponent at Newbattle. Jaci was unlucky to lose at the 18th.
However, there was winning success in the final of the Comiston Ladies Summer Foursomes as Jaci Moriarty and Mandy McBain beat Diane Moncrieff and Sue Ferguson in the Final over the Braid Hills.  A very close tie with Diane and Sue on the comeback trail however Mandy holed the crucial putt from of the back of the green to secure the win at the 17th.
well done all.

It’s been a successful year for Carole Owens.  Having won the Bronze Championship for the first time (despite being the lowest ranked Qualifier I may add). Carole added to her trophies by winning the Grace Robinson today.  A 71 was the winning score on the 9-hole countback from Lady Champion Diane Moncrieff another player having an exceptional year.
Myra Law took third place with on the 9-hole countback over Susan Maxwell.

The Gents Seniors Open went ahead today in what can only be described as monsoon-like conditions.
However the torrential rain and 50 MPH winds didn’t prevent some decent scores being produced.
Edinburgh Leisure’s Murray Ferguson was the trophy winner with a 3-under 64 his gross score of  75 was actually the best of the day, the Scratch prize went to Lochend’s Steven Walker with a 75.
Other Lochenders in the prizes were Kenny Saunders, David Oswald, David Harper, Ian Hume and Martin Kyles.
Willie Buchanan and Harry Moriarty also shared the two’s sweeps.

Its true we recently decided that photo’s and write-ups here would have to be restricted to Trophy competitions and special events due to the increasing number of medals and extra medals in the schedule.
However, today’s Ladies September Medal proved to be special for Eileen Gillespie, who, it’s fair to say, wasn’t having the best of days on the greens.
Eileen then took putting out of the equation by bagging a hole-in-one at the 15th.  Due to the low sunlight, neither Eileen or her playing partners actually saw the ball drop into the hole. It looked like it was going right of the green, however a favourable bounce must have sent it on target and there it was for Eileen to proudly pick it out,  well done.
A good day for the Medal winners too as Kelly McShannon won the Silver and Diane Crolla took the Bronze

There were a number of success stories for Lochenders out about last week and not all to do with golf either.
First up Kenny Craigy won the Portobello Championship with a convincing 4-Up win over Scott Forrest.
Portobello was also a happy place for Diane Crolla who won their Silver Championship and is said to be “over the moon”.
Playing our Jane Maclean in the final ensured Lochend was always going to be the winner.
Eileen Gillespie proved what an all-rounder she is by winning Summer Foursomes Final with Sheila Munro with a 2&1 win over Val Reid and Sue Sayer.
Then Eileen followed up next day at the Tennis with another successful day at Murrayfield’s Club Championships winning the Ladies Single and doubles (over a marathon 8 sets), so impressive when you think that is her 17th singles’ final win.
And our Maxi finished the week by winning the Comiston Ladies Medal Winners Final over the Braids.
Well done all!!

Susan “Maxi” Maxwell won the Rebecca Ellis Ford Trophy tonight. This is a Flag Competition where each players tries to get the furthest with par plus their Handicap.  Maxi ended with a superb tee shot up the 10th. Jaci Moriarty came close but her tee-shot at the 10th didn’t quite reach Maxi’s.
Maxi won this trophy in 2020, and this time Rebecca was here to present her with the trophy and voucher. Great to see Rebecca after four years, here on holiday from Australia.

Now here’s something you don’t see every day.
A strange thing happened during the Ladies Stableford today.  Coming down the 12th hole we noticed the three ladies in front were nowhere to be seen.  Couldn’t see them on the tee then they were spotted hunting around for, of all things, a lost trolley.  yep that’s right a trolley.
After a wee while they eventually found it. You may laugh but when you realise how far it went, you’ll understand the head scratching.
While they were at the 13th tee, Sue Sayer’s trolley had taken off and ran all the way over the 8th and 7th fairway’s unseen by the trio. The runaway trolley had finally come to rest at the perimeter fence at the 7th lying flat out in the rough, hidden from view. Some players sent them in the right direction, and thankfully no damage was done. Never a dull moment at Lochend.
No such drama for Nicky Wheatley who carded a very impressive 43 Points to win the event from Trish Lang and Janis Millar who both scored 40 points.
Nicky’s round must be one of her best around Lochend a gross score of 72 including a nice 2 at the 15th and £25 sweep bonus, well done.

It was the final 11 matches of the Lady Captain V Vice Captain (Europe V USA) Match tonight and Jaci Moriarty’s USA were chasing a 5-1 deficit from last weeks pairs. It was always going to be a tall order as Mandy McBain’s Europeans set out to win the three and a half points needed to retain the lovely Sandra Craig trophy.
All predictions went out the window once the matches got under way though. Early on the scoreboard favoured USA as Europe were only up in 3 and AS in an other and the fightback was clearly on.
However, Val Reid scored an early point to put Europe on there way.  In the top match, Diane Crolla turned her tie with Eileen Gillespie around from three-down, winning five of the last six holes for a 2-Up win and a crucial second point went to Europe.
With Jennifer Somerville adding another two points for Europe,  and the final five matches all swinging USA’s way, it was Myra Law’s tussle with Coleen Derighetti that looked likely to be the decider. Myra having got off to a quick start to be 2-up early on then it turned around as Coleen won four in a row to be three-up after 15. then the final swing as Myra was 1-up on the 17th and halved the hole to guarantee the half point needed for another Europe win, but it was an oh-so-close score of 9-8.
Well done both teams always an enjoyable evening with plenty of banter (and colour).  Rumours that the USA were sent  to the Sad Cafe and treated to left over Hot Dogs was thankfully fake news. We got to share the Pizza’s which were delish.

A great turn-out for the Captain’s Day Scramble today.  88 members in teams of four took to the course and, as ever with a scramble, the scores where crazy low.
The team of Keith Davis, Rohan Craig, Bryan Davis and Sean Millan lead the way with a 19-under nett score of 48, one stroke ahead of the Graeme Markey, David Fenwick, Veronica Gordon and Viv Mitchell team who took the runner-up spot on the 9-hole countback from Paul Mackay, John Selcraig, Tam Galloway, Jaci Moriarty who all had the chance at the 18th to putt for the top spot but just missed out.
Just to clarify, since 2020 the Scrambles have adopted the R&A / USPGA handicap recommendations  (25%/20%/15%/10%
from lowest to highest handicap).  It appears there are some members are still under the impression that it’s still 10% across the board. Definitely not the case.
We were also treated to a fine Peter Anthony Buffet and Live entertainment provided by the Mayfield Experience (well that’s what they’re called this week), including our very own Martin Kyles on drums. who performed some classic 70’s / 80’s rock tracks.

The first round of the Captains V Vice Captain Alternative Solheim Cup tonight and who would have predicted such an emphatic score for Mandy McBain’s Europeans.
Europe lead by 5-1 after tonight Foursomes and Fourball pairing’s.  However, with all 6 matches going as far as the 17th or 18th holes, the matches were all pretty close,  and with a little more luck, Jaci Moriarty’s USA could have got a bit more out of the contest.
Never the less a mountain to climb for USA with Europe needing only 3-and-a-half points to retain the trophy, but as we all know in Matchplay anything is possible.

Captain Mandy McBain bounced back from Saturday’s Championship final disappointment in the best way possible.  Carding 41 Stableford points in the Jessie Graham Trophy, but that was only half the story.   With Linda Hutchinson in the clubhouse with 40 points, Mandy reached the 17th on 38 points with 3 points required over the last two two holes.  That task was made harder when Mandy shot a seagull out of the sky with her drive, never mind the poor seagull it cost Mandy her first blob of the round.  But credit to her, holding her nerve to par the 18th  and get the required 3 points.
