Very heavy underfoot today for the ladies Winter Trophy.
Jane Maclean handled the tough conditions best with a 75. Two strokes ahead of Fiona Findlay. With Diane Moncrieff one further back with 78.
This was also the final round in the League which turned into a very close finish. With Jaci Moriarty, Fiona Findlay and Diane Moncrieff all in the mix going into today’s competition.
It was looking like Fiona was going to take todays 7 points and jump to the top. However Jane’s win knocked Fiona into second place for the 5 points and Jaci held on to win the league thanks to her 5th place and two points today. In the end only two points separate Jaci, Diane and Fiona at the top of the League

Duncan Ireland won the Champion Of Champions Tournament for the Neil Donaldson Trophy.
Quite apt that Duncan should win this trophy as Neil was one of his close friends.
Duncan’s card of 60 was three better than Martin Kyles Jnr with Gaeme Markey taking third on the 9-hole countback from Dougie Ross who in turn took fourth place on the countback from Maurice Paterson who did have the consolation of bagging two Two’s.

Mandy McBain won the Betty Noble trophy today with a brilliant 67. A round that included no less that five 3’s (two of which were birdies), very impressive.
Coleen Derighetti had a little run of 3’s at the 4th, 5th and 6th on the way to a gross 40 outward half but couldn’t maintain that level in the second half and finished second with 70.
Vivien Mitchell finished in third place with 71 (not to be outdone she did have a 3 at the sixth).
A wee incident on the 18th today as Linda Hutchinson took a tumble. She walked away with a bit of a soaking and maybe a bruise or two however, like the trouper she is, finished her round, in fifth place.
David Graham was the only person in the club who witnessed poor Linda’s fall.  Her playing partners were on the green and oblivious to what happened. Well Mandy did have a putt for a three you know.

News of more Lochender success on the road, first up Susan Randall and Diane Moncrieff (no strangers to a win or two recently) did it again at Blairgowrie winning the ladies section in their “Scottish Golf Pairs Challenge” over some fantastic courses with some fantastic scoring, they were 9-under twice I believe.
Viv Mitchell also excelled in the East Vets Autumn Meeting at Liberton with a fantastic 68 to take the overall nett score prize. Well done ladies.

Ladies Captain V Vice Captain Solheim Cup
The final day of the 2023 Captain V Vice Captain Solheim Cup match. This is the fourth year having been played, and for the first time the Vice Captain/USA team, lead by Susan “Maxi” Maxwell, took a lead into the final day.
Leading 4-2 meant it was still pretty close as 9 points would be enough for Europe to retain the trophy.
It was looking good for USA when, after three matches Christine Dugan and Veronica Gordon got the first points for USA and Jane Maclean secured Europe’s first point of the night winning her match with Maxi 2-Up (3-6 for USA now).  The tide was turning when Susan Newlands, Lorna Lynch and Diane Moncrieff won their matches to make it 6-6.
Linda Hutchinson then held off a late rally from Val Reid to edge USA in front again (6-7).  Viv Mitchell edged her match with Coleen Derighetti at the 18th to make it 7-7.
Nicola Moriarty’s emphatic win took the match to 8-7 and Europe 1 point from retaining the trophy.
Then there was Captain Jaci. Three down early on to Sandra Fairgrieve, she turned it around to be 2-up after 9. Jaci was then 1-up after 17th to guarantee a half point then duly won the 18th to get the full point needed to ensure Europe retained the trophy again.
Fiona Findlay added another point for USA, Linda Primmer and Mandy McBain ended all square so the final result was 9.5 – 8.5 to Europe so so close.
There then followed Celebrations, Banter and Pizza another great night well done all for, once more, creating a very colourful occasion.

Championship Finals Day
A couple of sporadic showers didn’t dampen the spirit and we were treated to some close finals today.
In the Gents Club Championship between David Dalgleish and three time champion Alan Thompson, David took the initiative early on and the tie flipped between David being 1 or 2 up. Then Alan got back to All Square after 9. The inward half followed in much the same vein with David holding on to win the tie 2&1 at the 17th for his second Lochend Championship is three years.
The ladies Championship was even closer with the match going the distance.  Eileen Gillespie started with a solid par at the first to go 1-up however fist time finalist Susan “Maxi” Maxwell got it back to all square after the 4th. Then a par at the 7th had “Maxi” 1-up then 2-up after the 9th. Then at the 12th, Eileen got the tie back to 1-down. A nervous 17th hole was won by Eileen to take the match up the 18th with “Maxi” 1-up.
Maxi held her nerve to sink the winning putt on the 18th and a new Ladies Champion was crowned.
Paul Mackay has been in the B Championship final previously, his intent was clear from the start in this final with Martin Kyles Snr.
Paul got off to a flyer winning the first six holes, then was 7-up after 8 holes. It stayed that way until the 11th where Martin started something of a comeback to go 6, 5, and then 4-down. That momentum was halted with a half at the 14th. Then Paul won the 15th for a 5 & 3 win.
The Gents C Section final was the tightest of matches as Sean McMurdo and Maurice Paterson fought it out.
With the exception of around the 14th 15th when Sean was 2-up there was nothing more than a hole either way and when Sean conceded the 18th this match went into extra time.
Maurice had the chance for the win on the first extra hole but missed a “tiddler” then Sean finally sunk the winning putt on the 20th hole.
In a nice touch for Sean, his Grandad, James McMurdo, who won this very trophy in 1972, came down to the clubhouse for the celebrations.
The Ladies Bronze Championship had Myra Law up against Val Reid. Val made the early move to be 2-up after 3.  Myra turned it around to be 1-up after 9 then proceeded to win the 10th, 11th and 12th that lead proved to be decisive enough for Myra to see out the 4 and 3 win for her 3rd Bronze Championship.
As ever Pippy and the bar staff kept everyone sufficiently fed and watered, many thanks.
Also big thanks to the volunteer scorers (John Williamson, Fiona Findlay, Stuart Mathie, Stuart McCallum, Jaci Moriarty, Mandy McBain and Scott Cross) who ensured the latest scores from all matches came through so members could see the latest position of all the matches. Not only on finals day but the throughout the Championship fortnight, your input was much appreciated.

Lochend has the winner…
Susan Randall won the Midlothian B Championship after a hard fought Final with Harburn’s Meg Laidler.  A good start saw Susan win the first two holes then was pegged back to All Square after 4 and then a see-saw battle continued as nothing more than one-hole separated them either way. Susan was one-down after 14, then won the 15th and 16th then produced a fantastic tram-liner to win the match on the 17th (2&1). Well done, a great achievement for Susan and for Lochend.
